Article Abstract:
The responsibility of the United States presence in Lebanon is reviewed. The United States wants to keep the oil coming from the Gulf. In addition, it wants a settlement which guarantees Israel's safety. Alternatives open to the Americans include withdrawal, a show of force, or holding the line. The United States will probably choose to hold the line, but it must get its goals straight.
