Price-matching policy and the principle of minimum differentiation
Article Abstract:
A study has demonstrated that collusive results such as market price increase are generated when each company promises to match or beat the prices of its competitors. The competition is not inhibited when pricing wars are controlled. Instead, the companies' competition for market shares are diverted to their choices of product locations. The degree of product differentiation is reduced as a result of the price-matching practice.
