Privatization in Jordan: pace of program picks up as framework is created
Article Abstract:
The Jordanian government is planning to launch a wide-scale privatization program as the Cabinet Committee on Privatization prepares the framework of an executive agency that will be tasked in implementing the government's privatization program. The Jordanian Investment Corporation has already been successful in selling a number of the government's shareholdings in private and public firms by means of open tenders. The government is also eyeing to implement its program by licensing private investments through the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission and the corporatization of state economic enterprises.

Oman: tax exemption, foreign investment, and expatriate labor
Article Abstract:
Several decrees and administrative decisions of interest to those transacting business in Oman were enacted during 1992. Businesses owned by Omani nationals had their exemption from taxes reaffirmed by Royal Decree 68 on Oct 25, 1992. The Commerce Ministry Foreign Capital Committee lifted restrictions on foreign investment in Omani firms on Aug 15, 1992. The Labor Ministry amended the law which governs the establishment of agencies that supply alien labor, making it possible for a non-Omani to open such an enterprise.

Jordan's new investment law, income tax law amendment
Article Abstract:
Jordan has approved an new investment law and a concomitant amendment to the Income Tax Law, effective Oct 16, 1995, and Jan 1, 1996, respectively. The new law opens the way for more foreign investment, permitting non-Jordanians to invest in all sectors and treating them the same as citizens. Anticipated regulations will further liberalize the investment regime. The new law grants a variety of tax exemptions to investments in industry, hospitals, hotels, and transport infrastructure. Other legal changes are discussed.
