The status of degree-granting programs in economic development
Article Abstract:
A survey of higher education institutions offering degrees in economic development showed a poor adaptation of the education system to the pressing demands for economic development professionals. Local governments are in dire need of such professionals, whose skills transcend the boundaries of finance, marketing and management, to include politics and social relations. The specialized nature of the degree makes its difficult for higher education institutions to formulate an effective curriculum which will equip the students with the necessary skills.

Information and training: the foundation for building a path to excellence
Article Abstract:
Economic development (ED) professionals need to receive training and information on an ongoing basis because many of them lack formal training in the field. In addition, economic development encompasses a wide array of disciplines which makes it impossible for ED professionals to gain expertise in every aspect of the profession. The need for information and training is further underscored by changing nature of the field of economic development. A directory of agencies providing information and training relevant to ED professionals is presented.
