"Professionalization" of economic development: the higher education linkage
Article Abstract:
Economic development needs to be included as a course in higher education to ensure that future practitioners are regarded as true professionals instead of as a versatile group of individuals having diverse backgrounds. The short training courses offered by the Economic Development Institute are not enough to 'professionalize' the discipline. Fortunately, the University of Southern Mississippi has been offering a two-year course leading to a Master of Science Degree in Economic Development as early as 1979. Other educational institutions should follow suit.

A successful economic developer possesses the five basic skills common to all professionals in any field. These are leadership, theoretical, practical, political and change skills. Leadership skills include decision making, planning and delegation. Theoretical skills include knowledge of economic globalization and particular development strategies. Computer literacy is an example of a practical skill while knowledge of goals and competition constitute political skills. Change skill is basically a positive attitude towards lifelong learning.
