Factors concerning the economic development and prospects for foreign investments in the Caucasus region of the former Soviet Union are examined. Topics include the difficulty the independent republics have had moving from a unified economy to an independent economy, the influence climate and geographical terrain have on the economy, and the relationship between energy resources and possible investments.

The Economic Code of Ukraine protects a totally outdated administrative-permit system which hinders economic and legal reform, while the systematization of commercial law standards is comparable to that of developed countries.
