Article Abstract:
British shipbuilders are threatening to strike on January 6, 1984. The unions are divided, some such as the electricians said they would not strike. The government is holding firm on productivity agreements. In West Scotland the shipbuilding crisis is particularly felt, with unemployment already high.

Many British unions are in financial difficulty. The National Graphical Association, the transport workers, and public employees are well off and can support fines and legal costs. Graphs show assets by union.
