Reforms for the new era of Japan and ASEAN: for a broader and deeper partnership
Article Abstract:
The Japanese prime minister, Ryutaro Hashimoto, sees the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) as having made progress in its 30 years of existence. Prosperity has increased, political divisions have lessened, and ASEAN has gained new members. There are still problems to be tackled such as poverty in some parts of southeast Asia, and the Japanese economy is in need of reform. Japan and ASEAN have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship and they should both improve cooperation with the World Trade Organization. Closer dialogue is needed between Japan and ASEAN countries as well as cooperation in areas like the environment.
