Response rates for the Consumer Price Index
Article Abstract:
The Bureau of Labor Statistics collects data on response rates for the Consumer Price Index to help users estimate its accuracy. Data on response rates are collected in two phases: the data collection phase for initiation and pricing and the data estimation phase for pricing. Response rates for clothing pricing and shelter pricing present special problems. A certain percentage of clothing is not available year-round, and the prices are only meaningful when they are available. Housing units may be habitable but no data on rental or sale prices may be available.

Update of CPI sample of urban areas planned for 1998
Article Abstract:
The Consumer Price Index's urban areas used for sampling are due to be revised beginning 1998 based on a 1993-1995 reference period. Buffalo-Niagara Falls, NY and New Orleans, LA are going to be removed from the area list while Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC will be added due to updated metropolitan area definitions. The revision attempts to account for consumer buying habit changes and population shifts.
