Russian directors in search of a strategy
Article Abstract:
This article discusses the role of directors and managers in Russia's transformation to a marekt economy, their models of leadership, changes in organizational culture, and differences in style among male and female directors based on information gathered from an extensive study between 1999-2000. Issues include the transformation of the directors' corps from Soviet to post-Soviet style directors, organizational transformations, the predominant models of power in Russia, centralism versus partnership, the understanding between Russian directors and regional authorities, the apolitical nature of the directors' corp and the specific features of their business motivations.

Russian enterprises after the August shock
Article Abstract:
The results of a survey taken with 742 Russian enterprise managers are examined, focusing on managers' assessment of business after the August 1998 financial crisis. Topics include economic condition of enterprises, ability of managers to track external economic changes, economic goals of private enterprise, plans to increase efficiency, and the conclusion that many enterprises are isolated in the marketplace, left alone to maintain relations with customers and suppliers.

State holding companies as a mechanism for managing enterprises in the state sector
Article Abstract:
This article examines the role of state ownership of enterprises in the Russian economy since the 1990s, asserting that despite privatization the state sector continues to own a significant proportion of industrial enterprises and that they have not created efficiency systems. The authors suggest options for reform the state sector, theoretical aspects of state holding companies and empirical studies of their role in Russia.
