SPAIN: MANAGERS ESCAPE FROM CARREFOUR
Article Abstract:
In Spain, re-organisation of French retail group Carrefour has brought as consequence nearly 150 vacancies in the group until now, mainly managerial staff from hypermarket chain Continente. The amount is considered excessive and the period in which these managers have left the group probably too quick. Reasons could be the effective job implemented by head-hunters as well as different organisational concepts in hypermarket chain Pryca and Continente. Continente was managed through a flat structure, while Pryca was controlled through a hierarchy directly eyed from French headquarters. Pryca's philosophy has impregnated Carrefour after the merger, being former Pryca managers the president of Carrefour (Mr. Vallbona), and the executive directors for main business divisions (Mr. Fleury in hypermarkets division); Mr. Legros in logistics and marketing; and Mr. Duran in finance and management. The managing director (Mr. Merry del Val) and directors of divisions for supermarkets (Mr. Rueda) and human resources (Mr. Valdes Dal-Res), as well as the assistant to the managing director (Mr. Folache), were previously staff of Continente.

SPAIN: CENTRAL PURCHASE GROUPS FACE THE FUTURE
Article Abstract:
In Spain, the purchasing groups IFA and Euromadi obtain a Pta 3,000,000mn turnover per year. Some 200 market chains are partners in Euromadi, and IFA has expanded the number of partners through the acquisition of CMD and Unagras and a new strategy to allow small supermarkets to join the group. Euromadi has improved its bargaining capacity owning a 7% stake in the European purchase central EMD. The growth of some of the markets chains carrying out acquisitions through Euromadi and IFA could permit them to go on their own, which will reduce the bargaining capacity of the centrals. They are expected to offer new services to attract clients in the case this could happen.

The president of Spanish-Argentinean oil operator Repsol-YPF, Mr. Cortina, aims to renew the higher levels of management, appointing young staff to replace some members as the executive vice-president for production and exploitation, Mr. Monti, who is 62 years old (limit age to be executive of the company). The executive vice-president of marketing and refining, Mr. Sancho, is expected to leave the company in 12-18 months due to the same reason.
