The UK market for female sanitary protection products is estimated at 273 million pounds sterling in 1994, up 53% from 1990, with feminine hygiene product sales estimated at 3 million pounds sterling. The largest sector of the market is external products, accounting for 58% of value, worth 159 million pounds sterling. Internal protection products were worth 114 million pounds sterling in 1994. The market is dominated by a few key players, including Johnson and Johnson (UK), Kimberly-Clark amd Procter and Gamble. The sanitary protection products market is forecast to reach 304 million pounds sterling by 1999.

Sales of sanitary protection products, in the UK, are predicted to increase to a value of 327 million pounds sterling by 2003, at 1998 prices, compared to 308 million pounds sterling in 1998. Some 26.6 million pounds sterling was spent on advertising sanitary protection products, in the UK, during 1997. Sanitary products are divided into two sectors, internal which includes all types of tampons and external referring to pant liners and towels. Sales of pant liners have risen by an estimated 40.6% between 1996-98 and are sales are predicted to continue to be very buoyant.
