Saudi financial policies and capital markets
Article Abstract:
Saudi Arabia is actively working to transform its economic base from oil exports to private initiative, thanks in part to govt deficits and the costs of the Gulf War. Signs of this transition include greater incentives for privatization, the maturation of the local capital market, a recent govt restructuring that makes better use of outside suggestions, and the country's Sixth Development Plan for 1995-2000 AD. The Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency will play a key role throughout this transition.

Yemen looks to oil to solve economic crisis
Article Abstract:
Yemen is relying on the oil industry for economic recovery. The unification of the Peoples' Democratic Republic of Yemen and the Yemen Arab Republic has led to economic problems, but Yemen expects oil exports to revive the economy by 1993. A US report, however, states that the oil industry is unlikely to turn the economy around. Yemen faces a severe foreign exchange shortage, and projects that require foreign exchange may have difficulty finding financing.

Labor in Yemen: workers bear brunt of economic problems and reform
Article Abstract:
Yemen's labor force is beset by problems of unemployment, low wages, and low skill levels, despite reform legislation that includes a guaranteed right to strike, specified national labor standards, and protection of women workers. The 1995 reforms gave the biggest increases to the lowest-paid government workers, but the excessive public payroll requires drastic trimming. Government privatization may require layoffs, a move opposed by the labor unions.
