Self-employment and windfall gains: evidence from the Swedish lottery
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to ascertain if windfall gains influence a person's decision to become and remain self-employed. Evidence of liquidity constraints was found from Swedish microdata on lottery winnings in 1981. The finding suggests that the probability of being self-employed rises when people receive windfall gains from lottery winnings as well as inheritances. This supports the hypothesis that liquidity constraints influence the decision to become and stay self-employed.
