Shift work and the business cycle
Article Abstract:
A simple model of a two-shift firm is used to examine the relationship between shift work and the business cycle and the effect of shift work on procyclical productivity. Results indicate that the late shift has a share of cyclical change in employment that is double its share of the employment level. In addition, procyclical capital utilization is confirmed as an important factor in procyclical productivity.

Productivity, market power, and capacity utilization when spot markets are complete
Article Abstract:
Eden's complete spot-markets model was used to test Hall's assumption that the marginal product of capital is zero if capacity is under-utilized and that increased output is due to labor. Results indicate a flaw in Hall's model when trade is sequential. The price-taking hypothesis is apparently confirmed if capacity rather than output is the choice variable.

Cyclical productivity and the workweek of capital
Article Abstract:
Solow productivity accounting was used to examine Survey of Plant Capacity data to determine the role of the workweek of capital in cyclical productivity. Results indicate that the apparent cyclicality of total factor productivity is due to differences in the hours of capital and that the workweek of capital accounts for gains in return at the plant level.
