Article Abstract:

The US economy has maintained its strength from the first quarter of 1997, based on the 1.1-point increase of the June Index Small Business Optimism to the 102.2 level from the November 1994 mark. Despite this performance, official data showed that production has surpassed expenditures. This development may be revealed as unwanted inventories, though this may not be revealed in the June 1997 poll since contentment with present inventory stock were boosted from May 1997.

The February 1997 Index of Small Business Optimism increased by 0.6 points to 101.7 as the US economy remained steady. Capital investment, inventory investment and hiring were strong while profits remained stable. Economic forecast continued to grow dim but expansion plans were at a record high. Profits from actual sales were expected to grow although plans to increase prices slowed down from January 1997.

The April 1997 results of Small Business Optimism bolstered the May 1997 Index of Small Business Optimism. The latter showed that the economy is still maintaining its performance from the 1997 first quarter levels of economic activity since real GDP growth is expected to stand at 5.9% for the first quarter of 1997. A big concern for small businesses is taxes followed by regulation and red tape.
