Stressing performance: evaluating the capital adequacy of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae
Article Abstract:
Minimum capital standard, critical capital standard and stress test are three capital standards used to assess Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae's capital adequacy. The stress test approach is used to assess the ability of the two secondary-mortgage-market companies to surpass serious default and interest-rate stresses for a period of 10 years. Such function gives the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO), a supervisory authority, an efficient regulatory oversight needed to ensure the safety and soundness of the two mortgage firms.
