Switzerland: positive about the market potential
Article Abstract:
The Swiss engineering industry was recovering from the 1992 decision not to join the European Union when the Asian crisis hit sales of key items like textile and energy production machinery. Asia is important to sales growth of the Swiss companies and many have invested heavily in production and research in Asia. The Swiss machinery industry is confident that exports to Asia will soon resume growth. Sales to Japan are increasing.

Drewry Shipping Consultants Ltd predict that the marine terminal industry will expand through at least 2005 because of increased demand for shipping services. Much of this demand is expected to occur in East and southeast Asia, despite the financial problems that have been prevalent of late. The expansion will need to address a predicted 60% increase in terminal business.

The power sector is expected to provide opportunity to building contractors that can upgrade and expand simple facilities and maintain them. The projects typically last a minimum of 12 years. The opportunities are greater in small markets with personal consumption rates of less than 100 kWh.
