Syria's medical equipment market
Article Abstract:
Syria plans to spend $133 million in its medical sector in 1995, up 42.7% from 1994, while building and equipping 21 new hospitals with 3,400 beds. As Syria has no local medical-equipment companies, it must import everything, and imports should increase 10% annually for several years. Germany is currently the top medical supplier with 20% of the market, though the US and Japan, now at 11% each, sometimes dominate, and market conditions now favor the US. Sales prospects and terms and conditions are discussed.

Growing demand for equipment as Syria moves into the ranks of middle-tier oil producers
Article Abstract:
Syria's rising oil production makes its state-controlled oil companies a promising market for foreign manufacturers of oil production equipment. Development of the Deir Al-Zur Basin oil fields in eastern Syria have made the country a middle-tier oil producer since the mid-1980s. Syria's oil production, managed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources, is dominated by the Syrian Petroleum Co and three joint ventures: Al-Furat Petroleum Co, Deir Al-Zur Petroleum Co and Al-Bishri Petroleum Co.

Upgrading and expanding Syria's electricity grid
Article Abstract:
Syria is facing shortages in electricity generating capacity because of illegal taps, aging or unsafe equipment, lower flow in the Euphrates river and lack of funding for expansion. Four new plants are under construction or being planned, but two other plants have had to be closed because of age or environmental problems. Plant conversions, plant refurbishment and transmission system upgrades are also planned, but Syria still faces a projected net deficit in capacity.
