The Debate that Never Was
Article Abstract:
The British chairman of the University Grants Committee (UGC) has received little response to his questionnaire on higher education policy sent to university vice-chancellors last fall. Many questions dealt with cost cutting in the universities. The chairman favors concentration of research in a few university centers and greater emphasis on science and technology. He supports the idea of universities receiving more income through private sector channels. Academics may wish to take part in the opportunity to influence government university policy, rather than ignore it.

More Girls Too
Article Abstract:
Oxford University has begun a campaign to attract students at Britain's state schools. The first step in the campaign is dismissal of its special post-A-level exam. The elimination of the exam should also help students from girls' private schools. Cambridge University is considering similar actions.
