The European Community's response to the 'new eastern Europe.'
Article Abstract:
The European Community (EC) has established aid programmes to help former communist countries in central and eastern Europe make the transition to a market economy, but has shown little inventiveness in its actions. The Europe Agreements concluded by the European Commission provide for political dialogue as well as economic and financial cooperation with central and east European states. However, with EC member states remaining preoccupied with domestic problems and unable to resolve fundamental policy differences, EC involvement in eastern Europe remains economically rather than politically oriented.
