The results of Democratic primaries in Illinois and Michigan, both won by Walter Mondale, are analyzed. The support of organized labor was an important factor in the Mondale victories. Political battles within Chicago's Democratic party divided its support among the candidates. Gary Hart needs to win the New York primary on April 3.

Gary Hart, candidate for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, and a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, supports a restructuring of American defense policy. A brief overview of his ideas is presented. Hart would raise the defense budget by four percent annually.
