The State Hart Almost Forgot
Article Abstract:
Gary Hart's victory in the Florida Democratic primary, winning thirty-nine percent of the votes compared to thirty-three percent for Walter Mondale, may represent his campaign's most significant step to date. Florida, a rapidly growing state, is highly heterogeneous. The elderly are a formidable voting group in Florida, although it is a misconception to believe they think or vote as a block. Florida voters may pass a ceiling on state revenues which may be collected in the November election. Mondale allies in Florida urge him to fight tougher, citing Hart's soft stand on Cuba's Fidel Castro. Latinos are likely to vote for President Reagan because of his anti- communist foreign policy.
