The case of the missing trade and other mysteries
Article Abstract:
The Heckscher-Ohlin-Vanek (HOV) theorem posits that countries with an abundance of a particular supply will export products made from this material. Repeatedly, however, empirical testing of this theorem has performed quite poorly. Nevertheless, deviations from HOV are seen to follow meaningful patterns. Trade is not observable relative to its HOV prediction. In addition, rich countries are found with a scarcity of most factors while poor countries have an abundance of all factors. It is concluded that HOV is not accepted if there is no alteration permitting home bias in consumption and international technology variances.
