The effects of human resource management practices on productivity: a study of steel finishing lines
Article Abstract:
The utilization of innovative work practices such as training, flexible job assignments, incentive pay, employment security and teams results in a significantly higher productivity level among a sample of 17 steel firms' 36 homogenous production lines. The resulting data are in line with recent theoretical models that emphasize the significance of complementaries among practices in the workplace. Better results were derived from the use of innovative management practices compared to a more traditional management approach that uses hourly pay with close supervision, stringent work regulations and narrow job descriptions.
