Keeping one step ahead of the Joneses: status, the distribution of wealth, and long run growth
Article Abstract:
The effect of status preference on long-term balanced growth is influenced by the type of consumers involved. An endogenous growth model developed showed that if all consumers are identical, a strong status preference tends to create a high long run rate of balanced growth path. On the other hand, if agents are heterogenous, a rise in savings incentives tends to lower the long run growth rate.
