The impact of global warming on agriculture: comment

Article Abstract:

Detailed US farm data have been analyzed to determine the impact of climate on agriculture. However, the application of cross-section analysis to land values to predict global-warming impacts is questioned. The implicit assumption of elastic supply of irrigation water at current prices and the application of global mean warming and precipitation effects to the US also understate greenhouse damage. It would be premature to state that the agricultural damages caused by global warming are smaller than previous estimates.

The impact of global warming on agriculture: a Ricardian analysis: reply

Article Abstract:

In contrast to the Ricardian method, measures in damage changes are more important in predicting global warming than comparative aspects. The adjustment costs, which is the costs in adapting to climate change, are not part of the estimate. In addition, the uncertainty of global warming impacts is focused on poor and tropical countries and nonmarket commodities such as health, aesthetic, ecosystem changes and catastrophic changes.

The impact of global warming on agriculture: reply

Article Abstract:

The Ricardian approach has been used to determine the impact of global warming on agriculture. The approach is based on standard rent theory, which helps identify the influence of changes on net economic welfare. The Ricardian approach shows that the estimated impact of global warming on agriculture is less severe than shown by the traditional production-function approach.
