The limits of trade policy reform in developing countries
Article Abstract:
Developing countries embraced trade liberalization in the 1980s in response to the economic instability that had been their lot under previous protectionist regimes. Economists are puzzled about this policy shift since they believe that free trade does not work during economic crises. The shift in trade policy is attributed to the influence of the World Bank and the natural tendency to test alternative means, radical though they may be, in times of crisis. The success of reform will hinge on the eradication of the economic ills rather than on the effects of trade policies.

How far will international economic integration go?
Article Abstract:
It is only possible to speculate about world economic integration, and whether this will be a trend in the 21st century. There was a previous era of economic integration which was lost through protectionist policies in the early 20th century. 'Globalization' is an imprecise term, so 'economic integration' is preferable. There is further progress to be made in integration, and there are political and legal obstacles. Financial crises could lead to a retreat toward protectionism, or there could be a move toward world bodies to promote integration.

Symposium on Globalization in Perspective: an introduction
Article Abstract:
It is not possible to give definitive answers to some wide-reaching questions about globalization, such as whether the rise in trade and capital flows merely represents a return to the levels of integration that were found before 1914. The level of integration is certainly below the theoretical benchmark of full integration, even in the advanced industrial countries. It is clear that there are constraints on the autonomy of national policy, but the extent to which these constraints have an influence varies.
