The relative price of fairness: gender differences in a punishment game
Article Abstract:
Economic transactions can be affected by ideas about fairness. A study involving a punishment game was conducted to examine gender differences in the impact of fairness on economic transaction outcomes. In the game, participants were asked to select to divide a larger pie with a 'bad' partner or a smaller pie with a 'good' partner. Results showed that willingness to reward a fair partner is influenced by the relative price of the two alternatives. This supports the notion that fairness is a preference phenomenon which can influence economic decisions.
