The shaping of higher education: the formative years in the United States, 1890 to 1940
Article Abstract:
Higher education is often seen as having developed its main characteristics after 1945, but these changes can be traced to the decades following 1890. The changes include the differences in resources per capita contributed by different states, the coexistence of research universities and liberal arts institutions, and the large size of the average US college. The impact of these changes can be seen today, with, for example states where there was little support for higher education in the early 20th century showing a similar pattern n the 1990s.

Cliometrics and the Nobel
Article Abstract:
Cliometrics may be defined simply as the application of economic theory to the study of history. Economists Robert Fogel and Douglass North are two Nobel Prize winners who use cliometrics in their work. They are distinguished from other economists who have used history because of their belief that economic history is a distinct field of scholarship and not just a branch of economics.

The factors that have prompted women to retain their surnames after marriage are discussed. The New York Times wedding announcements, Harvard alumni records and Massachusetts birth records are used to examine the pattern of surname retention.
