Traditional portfolio analysis emphasizes the need to resolve questions regarding an industry's attractiveness and a company's competitive position. While insightful, this approach ignores the matter of corporate context. This shortcoming, however, can be overcome by incorporating a third question regarding the parent's ability to add value to the business under its stewardship. Factors that need to be accounted for when analysing parental effectiveness include aggressive oversight and investment support.

Brief case: the role of today's board in corporate strategy
Article Abstract:
Corporate board members should carefully monitor the professionalism and objectivity of all company officials. The board must develop a system of quality assurance to define and review corporate strategies as well as investigate the skills and qualities of employees that will be promoted to executive positions. Furthermore, corporate directors should identify critical issues concerning corporate strategy and ensure compatibility between executive skills and company goals.

The long road to parenting advantage
Article Abstract:
Companies that want to diversify into other businesses are advised to use parenting advantage as a corporate strategy. The concept requires being a better parent for a given business than other possible owners. Acquiring firms must give themselves time to learn how to parent their new businesses. Three possibilities are presented for companies when diversifying or contemplating diversification into unfamiliar business.
