Transfers in kind: why they can be efficient and nonpaternalistic
Article Abstract:
It is traditionally assumed that altruistic transfers should be given in cash rather than kind, but in fact tied transfers are very common. It is found that tied transfers are an efficient way to deal with recipients' tendencies to behave in a socially inefficient way.
