UK overview
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom economy has been characterized by a stronger consumer and service sector, and a drop in manufacturing production, and reductions in interest rates have not helped to ease this division. Exports have dropped since summer 1998 and pound sterling has become over-valued. Investment looks set to fall, and unemployment to rise in 1999 and 2000. Consumers may respond by saving more, though rises in real income may help to boost spending. Meanwhile, inflation is dropping, and interest rates rates look set to fall.
