Unemployment and catching up: Europe vis-a-vis the USA
Article Abstract:
The sectoral structure of economies and labor market institutions may significantly affect the development of relative productivity levels among different countries. This was revealed through a macroeconomic model that aimed to explain why European countries lagged behind the US in terms of productivity during the 1970s and 1980s. The model further explained that a generous welfare scheme in Europe reduced the employment share of the manufacturing industry which reduced the number of people in the field of research and development which in turn caused the productivity difference.

Taxes and benefits in a non-linear wage equation
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to estimate a structural non-linear wage bargaining framework for the Netherlands. The wage equation was determined from a wage bargaining framework for a representative employer and employee. The outcome of the wage bargain was then characterized by the optimization of a Nash function. Results indicated a positive long-term impact of the median tax rate on wages. In addition, the marginal tax rate influences a small negative impact on wages.
