Unemployment in industrial countries: a danger to Asean?
Article Abstract:
Unemployment increased in industrialized economies from the late 1960s as a result of technological change. This unemployment led to protectionist measures. Clothing exports from countries in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) saw a deceleration of growth. Unemployment has tended to affect older and younger workers and those from ethnic minorities. It has become a key problem for industrialized economies. Protectionism has continued behind calls for fair trade and the development of regionalism. Imports from ASEAN countries have been affected as have capital flows to ASEAN members.

Sectoral specialization and competitive advantage: Hong Kong investments in the ASEAN region
Article Abstract:
A close relationship exists between sectoral specialization of foreign direct investment (FDI) and the competitive advantage of host ASEAN countries. An analysis of the data on Hong Kong FDI (HKFDI) in ASEAN economies shows that HKFDI has a sectoral bias toward labor-intensive manufacturing industries or commercial and service sectors, depending on the sectoral advantages of the home country. The sectoral bias leads to a regional division of investment, according to the competitiveness of the host. FDI in selective sectors and countries is more effective than general investment.
