Union organizing activity, firm growth, and the business cycle
Article Abstract:
The association between the growth of firms and changes in unionization was studied. Previous research suggested that profitability and unionization had a negative relationship. Data were collected on 229 union representation elections in 85 firms for the period 1965-84. The results indicated that elections were cyclical, but that there was no relationship between firm growth and unionization. Organizing activity had a negative impact on market value, but changes in growth were not observed.

Explaining household vulnerability to idiosyncratic income shocks
Article Abstract:
Agricultural households in developing countries are vulnerable to idiosyncratic shocks that directly affect crop or agricultural income. These shocks also indirectly affect wealth through household attempts at consumption protection from such shocks. Credit market accessibility affects interhousehold differences in vulnerability to income shocks. In India, well-developed labor markets alleviate the impact of income shocks by increasing labor market hours.

Criminal deterrence, geographic spillovers, and the right to carry concealed handguns
Article Abstract:
An analysis of concealed handgun law spillover effects on crime rates reveals that spillover effects are significant and almost always deleterious. The study also points out that spillover effects are most notable for property crimes and that criminals tend to move across communities more due to responses to concealed handgun laws than in response to changes in arrest rates.
