Variance estimates for changes in the consumer price index
Article Abstract:
Estimates of sampling error for January 1991 through Decemnber 1995 show that users of ther Consumer Price Index (CPI) should be careful when using its estimates to make inferences about CPI change for relatively short time spans, for particular goods and services, and for local areas. For small 1- and 2-month index changes, standard errors of CPI estimates for ,lower levels of item or area aggregation are about the same as the estimates themselves. Thus, inferences about them would generally not be reliable.

Scheduled updates for expenditure weights in the Consumer Price Index
Article Abstract:
Consumption expenditure weights for the consumer price indexes will be updated to the 1999-2000 period beginning with data for Jan 2002. Expenditure weights will then be updated at intervals of two years. Previously, expenditure weights had been updated about once each decade, when periodic major revisions of the index were made. Use of more frequently updated expenditure weights will allow the CPI to be more representative of current patterns of expenditure and inflation.
