World assessment
Article Abstract:
World economic growth looks set to slow in 1999, as does growth for countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. This correction is not likely to be as severe as that of the start of the 1990s, or that of the start of the 1980s. The main risk comes from a possible slowdown in the US economy which could seriously affect Europe. There are other risks, including the risk that Brazil could default or restructure its debt, and that this could affect capital flows to emerging economies as a whole.

World assessment: US and Eurozone productivity
Article Abstract:
The differences and similarities between economic developments in the US and the Eurozone are discussed. It is argued that there are many similarities between the two regions, particularly with regard to the level and the long-term growth rate of labour productivity per hour. However, the two regions have different patterns of comparative advantage.
