Article Abstract:
Economic indicators show that pound sterling's strength against European currencies is damaging export trade in the United Kingdom. Evidence indicates that 1.8% less gross domestic product figures for 1998 was caused by poor international trading. Domestic economic demand is on the increase, however. Economic aspects of body Monetary Policy Committee performance are discussed.

The prospects for the UK economy are discussed. Economic expansion has been negatively affected by a number of factors, including the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease and high oil prices. Low inflation has ensured that policymakers can take action to balance out the impact of these factors.
