World economy
Article Abstract:
The devaluation of the Brazilian real has had little impact on financial markets for a number of reasons such as support from the International Monetary Fund. There are still risks from a Brazilian recession, which could affect trade, especially with Argentina, and capital flows to emerging economies elsewhere could be hit. Economies hit by the Asian economic crisis are starting to recover, though there is concern about the Japanese economy. There is also concern that economic growth in Europe could be slowing and that there is too great a dependency on US economic growth.

Japan
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the factors affecting the Japanese economy is presented. The outlook for 2001 is at best flat with no significant policy initiatives from the government and the Bank of Japan's zero interest rate unlikely to make much difference.
