A nuclear reactionary
Article Abstract:
Epidemiologist Alice Stewart was responsible showing the harmful effects of X-rays on pregnant women in the mid-1950s. The low-level radiation was found to cause cancer in children, and Stewart's popularity among the medical sector plummeted as a result. Later, Stewart publicised evidence which suggested that the health of workers in a nuclear reprocessing plant in the US was being compromised. The personal and career background of Stewart, now aged 88, is included.
