A rationale for civic education: preparing for democracy

Higher education in the US should foster the development of a responsible citizenry. Present thrusts towards educational specialization has negated the development of this important attribute. Education should be once again geared towards encouraging the development of responisble citizens.

Gloomy complaints that Americans have lost their desire to participate in civic groups, parent-teacher groups, and community involvement are exaggerated, as good statistics on such groups have always been inadequate. An essay on the meanings of modern citizenship is included.
