AUT: why should we teach racists?
Article Abstract:
The Association of University Teachers is attempting to deal with the "profound implications" of demands from lecturers in the UK for the right to refuse to teach students who express fascist of racist views, or who are known to be members of far-right political organisations. The Association, which is examining the issue as part of a consultation paper on the growing activity of groups such the British National Party on campuses, states that it is its belief that education is a civilising force, a view that may not be compatible with idea that teachers have a moral right to exclude students who they believe to hold repugnant opinions.
