Absolutely confabulous
Article Abstract:
The annual conference of the US's most visible, and most maligned, academic association, the Modern Language Assn. (MLA), held in Toronto, Canada, at the end of Dec. 1997, was dominated by talk about jobs, economics and teaching. George Levine of Rutgers University was not alone in arguing that an over-production of PhDs is creating uncertainty in the teaching profession. Most of the MLA's 30,000 members come from the US and Canada and the main event of its annual conference is the job market. University presses from across the world attend the book fair, partly to look for new authors.
