A forgotten embarrassment of riches
Article Abstract:
F R Leavis always saw himself as a literary critic not an academic, although he taught at the newly-founded Cambridge University English faculty. With two friends he started the literary magazine 'Scrutiny' which became influential in the literary field. Leavis worked in poetry, drama and fiction criticism, and championed writers such as Austen, Dickens, Conrad and D H Lawrence. Lawrence was a particular favourite, as was Henry James.
