Books at the press of a button; France's library for the 21st century
Article Abstract:
A new national library, the Bibliotheque de France, has been commissioned and will open in 1996. It will take the entire collection of the Bibliotheque Nationale plus seven million more books. There will be room for 5,000 readers, who will be able to utilise computer technology. The design of the building has attracted some criticism, it will consist of four towers clad in glass linked by rectangular buildings and a garden.

The Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has published a report on education using statistics from its 22 industrial member countries. The statistics were gathered in 1988 and concentrate on features such as demographic aspects, systems of education and outcomes. The report emphasises that objective comparisons are difficult and should be seen in context.

Article Abstract:
A Centre for Sahara Studies has been set up in Algeria to facilitate the exchange of scientific information between the countries of Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia. The Sahara Desert's resources of water and fuel are seen as crucial as the area increases in population. The participants are also trying to set up trading agreements, and Libya is expected to join them.
