Checking links of quality and funding: would a tie-up between excellent teaching and extra funding be a valid and fair system?
Article Abstract:
The Higher Education Funding Council for England wants to make excellent quality a determining factor in the allocation of extra students and funds to universities in England. Funding is already linked to high quality teaching in Scotland and Wales, and the link would address the criticism that the funding of teaching in England is concerned with unit cost, not quality.

The academic is dead, long live the academic: the traditional idea of lone academics should give way to a team-based approach
Article Abstract:
The traditional definition of an academic is becoming less relevant as changes arise in society and higher education. Academics used to work alone, but a team-based approach involving academic-related staff such as librarians and IT specialists is now more appropriate.
