Clarke lays into useless history
Article Abstract:
Charles Clarke, UK education secretary, has again attacked learning for the sake of learning, telling a gathering at University College Worcester that he believes that the public purse should not finance "ornamental subjects", such as medieval history, and that the state should only pay for higher education that has a "clear usefulness". Sally Hunt, general secretary of the Association of University Teachers, responded by stating that she was appalled by Clarke's "narrow utilitarian view", while Gill Evans, professor of medieval history at Cambridge University, branded Clarke a "philistine thug".
