The ex-dictator and his degree of anonymity
Article Abstract:
An overview of newly released documents from the National Archives dating to 1975 and relating to the higher education sector. Amongst those released are documents which reveal that there was some disagreement between Government departments about the decision to allow deposed Nigerian dictator General Yakubu Gowon to study as an undergraduate at Warwick University and that the Government had targeted the university sector as one area in which it could achieve economies as part of its overall plan to reduce total spending by UKPd3,750 million.

Article Abstract:
Government papers from 1974 released by the National Archives under the 30-year rule reveal that the prime minister at the time, Harold Wilson, was immensely proud of the role that he played in the creation of the Open University (OU), as well as being aware of the University's potential political uses. Wilson noted that the OU was "one of the greatest achievements of our previous Government" and that he found it to be "vastly popular in the country".
