Rooted in Humboldt
Article Abstract:
Bringing together research and teaching was an idea promoted by Humboldt in 1810, and United States graduate schools offer a blend of research, and advanced study and teaching, organised in large units. The benefits of the economies of scale provided by this system can be contrasted with the smaller scale of research establishments in the United Kingdom, which are no longer appropriate to the late 20th century, due to the limitations imposed by their small size. Organization of research departments should promote integration, linking teaching and research in ways which can be traced back to Humboldt.
